Resident lobsters dominate food competition with range-shifting lobsters in an ocean warming hotspot

چکیده

Species redistributions are one of the most prevalent changes observed in oceans worldwide due to climate change. One major challenges is being able predict temperature-driven species interactions and outcome these for marine communities complex nature indirect effects. In ocean-warming hotspot south-east Australia, ranges many have shifted poleward. The range eastern rock lobster Sagmariasus verreauxi has extended into warming Tasmanian waters inhabited by resident southern Jasus edwardsii , which may lead increased competitive between species. Using video monitoring, we investigated how 2 compete food at current (18°C), future (21°C) heatwave (24°C) summer temperatures. Behavioural competition occurred 80% experiments, during J. won 84% showed more aggressive behaviour all This indicates that not only dominant direct than range-shifting S. but, surprisingly, also sustains dominance beyond its physiological thermal optimum under predicted ocean scenarios.

Chemical Communication in Lobsters

Lobsters are fascinating animals that use chemicals as messages regarding their sexual status, their standing in a social hierarchy, and whether they affiliate with or avoid conspecifics. This, plus their economic importance, makes them important models for the study of intraspecific chemical communication. Our chapter is an overview of these processes, including the types of interactions betwe...

Magnetic orientation of spiny lobsters in the ocean: experiments with undersea coil systems

The western Atlantic spiny lobster Panulirus argus undergoes an annual migration and is also capable of homing to specific dens in its coral reef environment. Relatively little is known, however, about the orientation cues that lobsters use to guide their movements. To determine whether lobsters can orient to the earth's magnetic field, divers monitored the orientation of lobsters tethered insi...

The ‘‘100 Lobsters’’ Project: a Cooperative Demonstration Project for Health Assessments of Lobsters from Rhode Island

The emergence of epizootic shell disease in the American lobster (Homarus americanus) has been devastating to the fishing industry in southern New England. In response, research was initiated to understand the roles of the environment, pathogens, and pollutants in the ecology and etiology of the disease. A comprehensive project was initiated in which tissues and hemolymph from 100 lobsters were...

Two sniffing strategies in palinurid lobsters.

Most studies of lobster chemoreception have focused on the model systems of Panulirus argus (Palinuridae) and Homarus americanus (Nephropidae). We compare antennule morphology across lobsters and conduct the first kinematic study of antennule flicking in a palinurid species other than P. argus. High-speed video analysis shows that Palinurus elephas flicks at a rate more than an order of magnitu...

Behavioral Immunity Suppresses an Epizootic in Caribbean Spiny Lobsters

Sociality has evolved in a wide range of animal taxa but infectious diseases spread rapidly in populations of aggregated individuals, potentially negating the advantages of their social interactions. To disengage from the coevolutionary struggle with pathogens, some hosts have evolved various forms of "behavioral immunity"; yet, the effectiveness of such behaviors in controlling epizootics in t...
